The election of 1796, was between two enemies, which were John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. The Federalist, John Adams was elected as George Washington’s successor and the Republican-Democrat, Thomas Jefferson, second in the electoral balloting, became Vice-President. Jefferson would defeat Adams in the election of 1800, to become the 3rd President of the United States. THE GENERAL ELECTION OF 1796: Electoral Vote: Adams, 71; Jefferson, 68.
