    The election of 1796, was between two enemies, which were John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. The Federalist, John Adams was elected as George Washington’s successor and the Republican-Democrat, Thomas Jefferson, second in the electoral balloting, became Vice-President. Jefferson would defeat Adams in the election of 1800, to become the 3rd President of the United States. THE GENERAL ELECTION OF 1796: Electoral Vote: Adams, 71; Jefferson, 68. Adams Won in 9 States: Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Delaware. Jefferson Won in 7 States: Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
