Why was Charles Babbage important to the history of computers?

  • When did Charles Babbage build the computer?

Babbage lived and worked in London England. He made proposed plans for his ‘difference engine’ on 14 June 1822 in a paper to the Royal Astronomical Society. The British government initially financed the project, to build the machine but withdrew funding when it became apparent that the machine would cost much more than originally anticipated.

Based on Babbage’s original plans, the London Science Museum constructed a working Difference Engine from 1989 to 1991. This works.
